Lewisham for vacation rental?

My family and I are traveling to London in August. Because we are a family of 6 we are looking at renting a vacation rental over a hotel. I found what looks like a nice one in our budget in Lewisham but having never been to there I am unsure about the area. Is it a safe community and will it be hard to get to the main tourist sites from there? We will be using public transportation BTW.
